Giambattista Piranesi (1720-1778) was one of the greatest graphic artists in 18th-century Europe. This is the first coordinated study of all Piranesi’s earliest surviving drawings, which date from summer 1740 to early 1742. Both architectural views and architectural fantasies, the drawings reveal the initial Venetian influence on Piranesi’s draftsmanship. They enable us to follow his journey from Venice to Rome, as well as his developing artistic sophistication. Even tiny drawings show Piranesi’s enthusiastic reactions upon seeing ancient architecture and antiquities in Rome. These drawings include his first made to be converted into prints. Finally, his treatment of them proves how much Piranesi personally valued his earliest works. This analysis includes eight drawings published and reproduced for the first time.
Giambattista Piranesi (1720-1778) è stato uno dei più grandi incisori del XVIII secolo in Europa. Questo è il primo studio coordinato di tutti i suoi primi disegni giovanili, databili tra l’estate del 1740 e l’inizio del 1742. Andrew Robison studied philosophy, classics, and theology before turning to art. Head Curator of Prints & Drawings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1974-2016, Robison published and arranged exhibitions on a wide range of artists from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Robison’s half-century of publications on Piranesi emphasize his status as a creative graphic artist. Those writings compare and analyze a plethora of Piranesi’s works on paper to illuminate how the artist used multiple possibilities of drawing and printmaking to achieve a changing variety of artistic visions.
Andrew Robison, prima di dedicarsi alla storia dell’arte ha studiato filosofia, cultura classica e teologia. Head Curator della collezione di grafica della National Gallery of Art di Washington dal 1974 al 2016, ha pubblicato e organizzato mostre su artisti dal Rinascimento al XX secolo.
